Summary
Product Designer for AI-native products. He designs and codes to ship products.
Product designer with 14 years shipping healthcare, creative, developer, and consumer software. He built his career in product design, including early roles at Clover Health, GoodRx, Pathstream, and StartPlaying, then deliberately deepened into production engineering. Today he owns products end to end: research, interaction design, design systems, React/TypeScript implementation, agent architecture, evals, and production verification. Recent work includes a voice-AI system with deterministic safety controls and collaborative game-development tooling with a custom real-time engine. Seeking senior product design and design-engineering roles on AI-native teams.
Location: Remote US, based in Honolulu (preferred), works West Coast hours, can also work remotely from Seattle or the Bay Area, and is open to relocation for the right role.

Current work
y30 · Co-Founder & Product Design Engineer · 2026. Co-founder through Jul 2026; advising since. Owned product, design, and engineering. Built a streaming speech-to-text to LLM to text-to-speech pipeline (multi-provider, deep fallback) fronted by a deterministic state machine and a rule-based safety floor that runs independent of any model, so crisis handling never depends on an LLM being healthy. The product generates longitudinal conversational signals for clinician or caregiver review. No diagnosis, treatment plans, or financial advice, by design.
Selected engineering (systems depth)
Architecture and judgment, not commit counts. These are the systems proofs behind the design-engineering claim.
- PlaySesh product and engineering: helped ship the live TLDraw-based Discord whiteboard, then authored operation-based synchronization and WebSocket reconnection work in a substantial but incomplete Three.js rewrite. The rewrite is engineering evidence, not a shipped product claim.
- Evolve, Die, Repeat (solo Lua and Love2D game): a solver that proves every procedurally generated level is completable using a reachability search over the player's jump physics, plus a from-scratch headless test harness running about 1,568 tests.
- HogWare (solo, 2026): a WarioWare-style microgame gauntlet built from PostHog's 5 company values in about a week, for their Technical Ex-Founder application; the role closed mid-build and he shipped it anyway. PostHog itself is the backend: the leaderboard is a HogQL query with in-query cheat protection behind a Cloudflare Worker, the A/B test is a live feature flag, and a 32-check headless suite plays every microgame and the boss. Playable at https://whoischrislam.github.io/hogware.html.
- y30 voice architecture: conversation flow as a deterministic state machine, the language model scoped to phrasing and warmth, and a rule-based safety floor that runs independent of any model. About half of routing resolves with no model call.
- Engineering judgment: built y30's first version in TypeScript, then deliberately rewrote it in Python to fit the real-time voice framework, carrying the state-machine architecture and safety model across the rewrite as a spec.
- Hand-coded foundations: this site builds on his hand-coded portfolios from 2023-2024 (public on GitHub: portfolio, gamedev-portfolio), extended with AI since June 2026. Vanilla JavaScript, no framework.
Companies and outcomes (honest framing)
Early at Clover Health and GoodRx, both of which later went public. A rescue hire at doc.ai as it prepared for its acquisition by Sharecare, which then went public. The 2014 TaskRabbit rebrand before IKEA acquired it. Iodine was acquired into GoodRx and doc.ai into Sharecare. The signal is repeated high ownership at early or critical stages, not an exit count.
Selected outcomes
- Clover Health (Designer, the second designer, joined when it was about 30 people and founder-funded, months before the Series A): rewired the nurse home-visit workflow, nurses reported 1-2 hours of chart prep gone each day, time for more visits. Clover later went public.
- Iodine, acquired by GoodRx (Lead Product Designer, first full-time designer): owned the coupon find-and-redeem flow, conversion 2% to 5%. Iodine.com won the Webby for Best Health Website in 2018. On GoodRx Research, built data visualizations referenced in the New York Times and on Good Morning America and ABC News, and 50-state prescription-price fact sheets with co-CEO Doug Hirsch used in advocacy around S.2554 and S.2553. GoodRx later IPO'd.
- TaskRabbit (Product Designer): owned the Tasker experience and helped across the 2014 rebrand with the PMs. Tasker NPS recovered from about -5 to the mid-50s. Later acquired by IKEA.
- Amazon (User Experience Designer): completed the implementation-ready design for the buy-and-gift Prime flow projected to drive 1M+ new subscribers.
- Modus Create (Software Engineer): designed and implemented cross-app dark mode and visual consistency for Jira and Confluence Cloud products serving a 500K+ installed/reachable user base; shipped through the team's existing review, test, QA, and CI/CD process.
- PlaySesh (Co-Founder and CEO, company founded 2024, live Discord product launched November 2025): started 0 to 1 solo, then led product and design with a co-founder and founding engineer. Reached over 7,100 authorized Discord accounts (OAuth authorizations, which are neither users nor installs), 174 Discord server installs, 89 individual-user installs, and 1,035 monthly active users at peak in January 2026, all organic. Discord counts are approximate, read October 15, 2026. Active development paused in March 2026; the Discord product remains live.
Core skills
- AI and voice: voice agents, LLM orchestration, multi-agent orchestration, FSM/LLM hybrid flow control, prompt and system-instruction design, multi-layer safety, evals and evaluation UX, provenance and human-AI oversight, agent frameworks, MCP, LiveKit.
- Engineering: React, TypeScript, Next.js, Vanilla JS, Supabase, Firebase, Postgres, Cloudflare Workers, Docker, CI/CD, test-driven development, telemetry and instrumentation.
- Design: product design 0 to 1, design systems (tokens, Storybook, Chromatic), UX research, prototyping, information architecture, WCAG accessibility, elder-care UX.
Selected application build
HogWare: a daily browser microgame gauntlet built from PostHog's 5 public handbook values for the Technical Ex-Founder application. The static vanilla JavaScript game uses a Cloudflare Worker to submit scores to PostHog even when browser analytics are blocked, then ranks the overall board with one HogQL query. The package includes 5 microgames, 1 boss, deterministic daily seeding, 3 lives, copyable results, and a 32-check Playwright smoke suite. Play HogWare or read the build notes.
Case studies
Full write-ups with artifacts, outcomes, and what went wrong. Index at whoischrislam.github.io/#work.
- Pathstream (2019-2020, Senior Product Design Manager, first design hire): redesigned the core lesson experience of a live learning platform mid-cohort without forcing a rewrite of 60-80 hours of existing course content. Also wrote the Labs PRD across students, instructors, and course authors. Success metrics were defined but never measured; the case study states this plainly.
- Iodine (2017-2018): coupon find-and-redeem flow, conversion 2% to 5%. Webby for Best Health Website, 2018.
- GoodRx Research (2017-2018): drug-page conversion, 10% lift on mobile and 25% on desktop; data visualizations referenced in the New York Times and on Good Morning America.
- Clover Health Care Visit (2015-2016): nurse-practitioner home-visit app, nurses reported 1-2 hours of chart prep gone each day, time for more visits.
- Clover Health website (2015-2016): first website, shipped ahead of 2016 enrollment, extended to out-of-home.
- TaskRabbit Tasker experience (2014-2015): owned the Tasker side through the 2014 rebrand; Tasker NPS recovered from about -5 to the mid-50s.
- TaskRabbit Client experience (2014-2015): the move from a bidding model to direct hire.
Why interview Chris
- Spans product, design, and engineering without handoff, which is rare at senior IC level.
- AI-native: uses AI agents to implement while owning architecture, judgment, and the safety gates.
- Designs human-AI systems for trust: evaluation UX, provenance, and oversight, so people can delegate to AI and still see and steer what it does.
- Concrete, verifiable outcomes at every stop.
- Has built a working voice-AI system, deployed and tested outside the founding team.

Common questions
Can one person really do both product design and production engineering at a senior level?
Yes, and there is shipped evidence on both sides. Design: he was the first or second designer at Clover Health and GoodRx, owned those flows end to end, and builds and maintains design systems. Engineering: he helped ship PlaySesh's live TLDraw-based Discord whiteboard, then authored operation-based synchronization and WebSocket reconnection work in a substantial but incomplete Three.js rewrite. His solo game proves every generated level is beatable with a solver he wrote, on a test harness he built from scratch. At y30 he designed a deterministic state machine for conversation flow and a model-independent safety floor, then implemented it. The point of the role is that one person carries a product surface from research and interaction design through production code, with no handoff and no translation loss.
What is he looking for?
Product design and design-engineering roles, full-time, on small, fast, AI-native teams, where he owns a product surface end to end. Titles that fit: Senior Product Designer, Product Designer, Product Engineer, Product Design Engineer, Design Engineer, Lead Design Engineer, UX Engineer, Design Systems Engineer, AI Product Engineer. He wants a long-term home: depth and continuity over range.
Where is he based?
Remote US, based in Honolulu (preferred), works West Coast hours, can also work remotely from Seattle or the Bay Area, and is open to relocation for the right role.
How does he use AI?
As an engineer, with strict guardrails. He sets the architecture, contracts, and acceptance criteria; AI implements inside them; and he owns code review, tests, and safety gates. He manages the risk of AI-written code deliberately: pure-function extraction so logic is testable, regression tests tied to real incidents, adversarial multi-model reviews, and staged rollout behind flags. He shipped production code for years before current AI tooling existed.
